I wanted to post this picture to dispel the thought that you need to spend thousands of dollar to produce a pleasing picture. Okay some will say that the subject matter here is not very pleasing. My point is that this picture was taken with an older 5 mega pixel point and shoot camera. It has not been retouched.
What pleases my eye is the composition of this picture. I do not know how many pictures in my port folio are boring full frontal rotunda of the Texas Capital. When you find the main subject such as a building think to yourself what you might do to personalize the image. In this case I included the bronze statue in the foreground. You can read into the symbolism if you wish. That was not my intent, symbolism, I just liked the view. An inexpensive decent camera and a little creativity is a large part of what you need, not the overkill I own.
Bible thought of the day:
Psalm 18:1-3
1 I will love thee, O LORD, my strength.
2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.
3 I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.
Located on the Brazos River just east of Brazoria, Texas on Hwy 322 is this old railroad swing bridge. The close up is of the swing mechanism. Google Map

Bible thought of the day:
Deuteronomy 6:6-8 (New International Version)
6 These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts.
7 Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
8 Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.
Take pictures of what you enjoy and what interests you. That is the most important step in creating good pictures. Oh and always remember Squawk’s rule, if you like the picture you took, ignore the critics.
Case in point is this picture of the San Jacinto monument below. I admit, to my own eye, there are a lot of things that could have been done to improve this picture, maybe filling the picture with some more limbs to frame the monument, but hey I like it. Since most of us will never see our pictures published in the National Geographic, at the end of the day it is us and our families that we please. So take it easy on yourself when critiquing your own work. Unlike with people, you can always go back to the monument and get the picture you want…….. and I have.
Bible thought of the day:
Romans 5:16-18 (New International Version)
16 Again, the gift of God is not like the result of the one man’s sin: The judgment followed one sin and brought condemnation, but the gift followed many trespasses and brought justification.
17 For if, by the trespass of the one man, death reigned through that one man, how much more will those who receive God’s abundant provision of grace and of the gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man, Jesus Christ.
18 Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men.
Btw this is the female of the garden orb species. The males are not quite so colorful or as large. But I digress. Yesterday I promised to show the belly of this beauty. The colors are striking.
Another friend of my commented that spiders were indeed beautiful to look at…. from afar. I was about a foot from this girl, which brings me to a point about photographing things closeup. If you decide to take the plunge and purchase a rig that you can change lenses, do yourself a favor and do not buy an ultra closeup lens. You have heard of those things that you can get to within an inch of your subject. What I have found over the years is you end up getting in the way of your available light. That is, you cast a very dark shadow on your subject. I used a 50-200mm zoom lens on these pictures allowing me to stand off a bit and use natures own light or a flash.
Bible thought of the day:
Job 8:13-15 (New International Version)
13 Such is the destiny of all who forget God;
so perishes the hope of the godless.
14 What he trusts in is fragile ;
what he relies on is a spider’s web.
15 He leans on his web, but it gives way;
he clings to it, but it does not hold.
